STOCKPORT: TOWN CENTRE WEST CLOSE TO REALITY?

Stockport: Town Centre West Close To Reality?

There is growing hope about the changing face of Stockport.

Alex Ganotis is the council leader in Stockport and he spoke to the local press about the fact that this part of the town centre is one that has been focused on in recent years with a number of attempts to regenerate it having been considered and examined.

Ganotis said; “What we’re looking for is additional power to really transform that part of the town centre. We believe on this site we can create a new urban village of up to 3,000 new homes. If we can build 3,000 new homes there, it means 3,000 fewer homes on green belt in Greater Manchester.”

It never hurts to change the image or perception of a place that has been overlooked and if the area is subsequently referred to as “Town Centre West”, it could help to provide fresh impetus. There is no doubt that greater powers for the local authority should allow quicker and more effective progressive to be made in this area.

Should discount rates be offered to businesses in the area?

One thing that will likely be on the agenda is businesses receiving discount rates for relocating to the area. There are strong opinions on this style of benefit and while there will be people who question businesses being supported while people aren’t, it can only be hoped that the longer-term benefit of supporting businesses provides a trickledown effect for people in the local area.

After all, if there are more jobs on offer, it can only be good for the local economy with residents and businesses profiting.

Business investment can change the area for the better

The report that was placed in front of the council leaders, stating; “The establishment of a Mayoral Development Corporation represents a very prominent signal to the market of the public sector’s long-term commitment to regeneration in a defined area. This in turn, can be expected to bring about greater investor confidence.”

Given the opposition to building on green belt areas in the community, there is a strong level of support for building on brownfield land. This is a view that is shared by the local council and by members of the public, which makes the Town Centre West so appealing for people involved with the transformation of Stockport.

A report presented in Spring of this year defined the Town Centre West area as being bordered by the A6 in the east, King Street and the Pyramid the West, the M60 in the north and Longshut Lane West in the south. A lot of this land is currently derelict or is being used for industrial proposes. There is also the railway station in this section, with the site of the proposed transport interchange also intended for this part of the town.
