STOCKPORT IS CLIMBING HIGH

Stockport Is Climbing High

There is no doubt that Stockport is climbing high in people’s expectations and on lists of wonderful places to stay in the UK, but the town may be climbing into the sky. This will be the case if a planning application for the site of the former Greenhale House on Piccadilly comes to fruition. This is because the developer firm Urbanize Homes has submitted their application for what could become one of the tallest buildings in the town.

Given the need for property in Stockport, a tower with 185 apartments would be very welcome. The plans suggest that the tower will hold 22 storeys at its highest point. There will also be a covered piazza found in the lower end of Piccadilly which will hopefully offer up commercial opportunities too.

There will be some affordable apartments in this Stockport project

The initial plans indicate that three-quarters of the apartments will be two-bed apartments. The remainder of the apartments will be one-bedroom apartments and there will be 9 apartments classed as affordable accommodation. It is also believed that there will be space for 120 cars to park in the development.

This isn’t the first time that a proposal has been submitted for a major tower on this site. In 2008, there were plans made for a 23-storey building which would house 155 apartments. In more recent times, Urbanize had previously submitted a plan which contained 155 apartments over 20 storeys.

The architect behind the plans says that the basic form of the proposal from a decade ago remains in place but tweaks and improvements have been made. There have also been considerations made to optimise construction costs which will hopefully make the project feasible.

Times are changing fast in Stockport

Greenhale House was a rather imposing structure in Stockport. It was built in the 1970s and it stood tall at six storeys, but it was demolished back in 2000. Since then, the site has mainly been used as a car park, so if it was transformed into a modern apartment block, it would be a significant move forward for the town.

Given that Stockport Council is keen to provide up to 3,000 homes in the centre of town, this is the sort of project that can make an enormous difference to the aims of the council. The largest site that is currently being considered is the area surrounding the railway station. It is believed that this could house close to 800 properties. Another site, encompassing the depot for Stagecoach and office blocks in King Street, could deliver around 700 homes to Stockport, so there are significant plans in place.
