MOVING HOME IS EXPENSIVE

Moving Home Is Expensive

Buying a home is expensive, but moving house is also costly. A lot of buyers underestimate or don’t realise the costs involved with moving home. A new study carried out by Admiral Home Insurance suggests that a third of British people who moved home wished they had carried out more research into the cost of moving home.

The report suggests movers need to have an additional budget of £2,000 to cover the cost of their move, or they could face additional charges.

Some of the exciting findings from the report include:

  • 83% of movers state they require help from friends or family members to transport belongings to their new house
  • One-third of respondents relied on storage facilities
  • 46% of respondents took between three and six days holiday from work to complete the move

The average cost of hiring a removal service was £353, storage space costs an average of £532, professional cleaning services cost an average of £147 and the average price of the painting and decorating was £873. There was also an average cost of £34 for re-directing post, which is the sort of expense many house movers overlook.

Try to consider as many costs as possible when moving

With other expenses such as pet care or childcare to deal with, many movers found themselves shelling out for costs they hadn’t considered. 10% of respondents said they didn’t even budget for house moving services, even though they used this style of service the previous time they moved property. Hiring a van and moving home with support from friends and family members is more affordable, but this can be challenging work.

Noel Summerfield is the Head of Household Insurance at Admiral, and he said; “Regardless of whether you’re buying or renting a house, there are lots of different costs you need to factor in, so it’s important to do your research beforehand to make sure you budget enough to cover everything you need.”

Some movers like to have insurance in place

Of course, as this research was carried out by an insurance company, there was always going to be a focus on insurance costs, with Noel saying; “It’s very easy for insurance to slip off the list of things to think about, but this could leave your belongings and your home at risk when moving. It’s vital to have your contents insurance sorted out before the day of the move because accidents can happen and the last thing you want is for your belongings to be broken or damaged during an already stressful time.”
