METROLINK COMING TO STOCKPORT?

Metrolink Coming To Stockport?

There is hope that Stockport will be connected to the Metrolink within the next ten years. Stockport is evolving rapidly, and if this change occurs, it will be a massive sign that the town is on the up. The Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, has raised hopes about the network, but he has also pointed out that Government funding is required to bring these hopes to life.

Although there is optimism regarding the introduction of the Metrolink in Stockport, Andy Burnham stated, “It’s important to point out that would require government funding. We would not be able to identify the funding at a Greater Manchester level to do that, but obviously, we would want to work with colleagues in Stockport to make that case to the government.”

Optimism is high that Metrolink will arrive in Stockport

Even though the arrival of the Metrolink in Stockport is far from certain, the prospect has been welcomed by many local councils. Councillor Elise Wilson said this is “great news for Stockport” and believes it is evidence the borough has secured “significant commitments” on the Metrolink heading to the town.

After the meeting, Councillor Wilson spoke to local media, saying; “Stockport has been left out of Metrolink for too long. This commitment is a significant step towards rectifying this which also shows the importance of working together with Greater Manchester colleagues for the benefit of Stockport residents. Having the collective voice of the combined authority backing means a stronger case to government to make this happen.”

The Councillor spoke about the impact the Metrolink would have on Stockport. Even though the town is noted for its dependable transport links, Councillor Wilson states the addition of the link would bring “about the affordable, integrated and efficient public transport network residents deserve”.

There is support from council figures

There was further support for the Metrolink from Councillor David Meller, who is the cabinet member for economy and regeneration on Stockport Council. He also believes the addition of the Metrolink will usher in “significant benefits” to Stockport, and surrounding areas. While a lot of the benefits will occur in the town centre, areas such as Cheadle, Marple and Hazel Grove could prosper too. Councillor Meller said; “This is an opportunity to ensure the extensive regeneration efforts in the town centre further benefit other parts of the borough as part of our commitment to our district centres.”

With convenient transport links to the centre of Manchester, and significant developments taking place, Stockport is the ideal place to buy, live or invest.
