FURTHER GROWTH FOR STOCKPORT?

Further Growth For Stockport?

You can’t have failed to notice the amount of work being carried out in and around Stockport, but it is important that the momentum and enthusiasm for work are maintained. Therefore, news about a proposed establishment of the first Mayoral Development Corporation, or MDC, in Greater Manchester should be of interest.

It is hoped that the MDC will drive work in the west of the town centre, transforming 130 acres of brownfield land into an exciting urban village. It is hoped that up to 3,000 homes can be added to the local community, which would certainly be a boost to people looking for property in Stockport.

It is hoped that new developments will be realised more easily in the future

The local council is set to partner with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, or the GMCA, to determine how the MDC can move forward with the Town Centre West development. The role of the MDC is to assist in removing barriers which prevent development, to help generate or garner fresh finance for the scheme and to create a sustainable framework which would make it easier for development work to be carried out.

The cabinet member of economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, Cllr Kate Butler released a statement, saying; “We have made a firm commitment to the people of Stockport that we will – as far as possible – build the homes we need on previously developed land. This Brownfield First approach is central to our Town Centre West ambitions and the proposed Mayoral Development Corporation.”

The council has stated they are prepared to engage with local businesses and residents. This is an important part of any development project because while it is vital to draw new people and firms to the area, it is also essential to offer new opportunities for the people who already live and work in the Stockport area.

More will be known about the project by the end of 2018

The changing face of Stockport has been very pleasing and there are a lot of developments which are helping to reinforce the town as a worthwhile place in the north-west of the country. There will be further discussions about the proposal at the next GMCA meeting, but the final decision is expected to be made in December of 2018.

As Stockport property specialists, we are here to make a difference, and we like to think that there will be many more developments in the local area. There is no denying that Stockport has changed of late, and for the better, but of course, there are options for people looking to buy, sell or let property in town.
