ELDERLY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CAN HAVE BIGGER IMPACT

Elderly Housing Development Can Have Bigger Impact

There are many plans being put in front of the local council and plans for a retirement living complex have been recommended for approval, albeit while waiting on contributions from the developer. The project is planned for the Royal Oak site, which used to house a Robinsons pub, and could see 40 self-contained apartments coming to the area.

If the project goes ahead, there will be 28 two-bedroom properties and 12 one-bedroom properties across four storeys. Not everyone is supportive of the project as there were four objections raised but there were also 10 expressions of support. While the Highways Officer has issued no objection in principle, matters regarding site access, servicing and parking have been stated. However, it is believed that many of these matters have been addressed with amendments to the layout since the prior submission in December.

Stockport needs elderly housing

There is no denying that there is a need for housing for elderly residents in Stockport. This was listed in the Stockport Housing Needs report which was issued in 2015, and this sort of project would go a long way to meeting the needs of these people. Providing care for the elderly is crucial but there are also other factors to consider in the longer-term with the development of elderly housing projects.

It may be that elderly people moving into these care homes will free up housing for other people. Whether this is through social rent or even property going on sale to the general market, providing elderly people with a safe place to live can bring benefits for the wider community.

Open space is crucial, but houses are even more vital

There have been some concerns about the loss of open space to facilitate this development but there is a contribution from the developer to offset this and there is also the fact that Stockport has a greater need for housing than it does open space right now.  Finding the balance in a local area is difficult and it is right that people have concerns or complaints about the loss of open space.

However, the more pressing issues in Stockport in 2018 are related to housing and providing suitable care for the elderly. If this project proceeds, it can only be hoped that there will be significant benefits for the entire community, which is something we all want to see.
