DOES REDROCK DESERVE CARBUNCLE CUP?

Does Redrock Deserve Carbuncle Cup?

It doesn’t take much to make a news story these days. With 24-hour rolling news channels on television and a desire to fill an almost infinite number of inches online, there is a new story or angle awaiting around every corner. Take the Building Design’s (BD) Carbuncle Cup for example. This is an award that highlights buildings that are deemed to be out of touch with its surroundings, of its time or even just to be very bad looking. Taste is a subjective matter, but it appears some people believe they have better taste than others and this provides them with the platform to deride and criticise!

Still, it is just a bit of fun, an excuse to fill airtime and not something to be taken too seriously! At least it can only be hoped that is the opinion in Stockport given that a major development in town has walked away with the cup.

The development has been welcomed by residents

The Redrock Stockport development, which cost around £45m and has been regarded as a terrific addition to the town was the winner, beating out some bizarre buildings around the country. It is likely this news will come as a surprise to many because reactions to the leisure complex have been positive. The cinema has brought in great crowds, the gym has been thriving and the various shops and restaurants have helped to bring a touch of sparkle to Stockport life. Residents have certainly been happy with the addition of the complex, but judges believe that the award has actually “ridiculed” Stockport town centre with one judge being quoted as saying, “You feel sorry for the people of Stockport”.

Some people don’t like modern buildings

It is fair to say that the building has a modern approach and there may be a bit too much going on the outside of the venue but is it really that bad to look at? You could perhaps quibble about the colours involved with the building too but ultimately, as a shell for venues inside, it does its job more than adequately. These awards are a bit of fun but when you think about how many awful looking buildings there are around the country, it does seem strange that a modern and resourceful source of engagement for the local community would be highlighted in this manner.

As Stockport property specialists, we are here to make a difference, and even though everyone doesn’t appear to have fallen in love with what is taking place in Stockport we appreciate what the town has to offer.
