300 NEW APARTMENTS FOR STOCKPORT?

300 New Apartments For Stockport?

It seems as though new Stockport property plans are announced each week. Therefore, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Hodder + Partners have published proposals for Weir Mill. The architect firm hopes to bring close to 300 homes to one of the most prominent residential locations in the heart of Stockport town centre.

The development is set next to the viaduct, this site is a property hub that will be seen by thousands every day, and will no doubt appeal to many looking for a central home. Of course, this is a site of historical importance in the local area. Some of the mill buildings date to 1700s, and although there have been many upgrades and improvements in the intervening years, there is a range of Grade II listed buildings in the mill setting.

More than 300 apartments are included in plans

The plans include two new-build blocks in addition to retaining and then converting two mill buildings. The conversion work is set to bring 90 apartments to the town centre, 105 homes are expected to be added in a block which lies next to Chestergate and then an additional 102 apartments will be found alongside the viaduct.

The proposals are set to bring 151 one-bedroom apartments, 139 two-bed apartments and then four three-bedroom properties to the town. The exterior of the buildings will be brick-clad and glazed, in an attempt to blend in alongside the viaduct and the mill buildings which are in place right now. The blocks will vary in height.

Commercial work is also scheduled for the area

While property developments are an improvement, the success or failure of these developments is often linked to commercial work. There are plans for two business units to be developed, which will hopefully provide further impetus to the project. Arrangements are in place for a 4,700 sq ft commercial unit in a mill building located on the Mersey while a smaller commercial unit, comprising of 1,100 sq ft, is going to be set up across from the Kwik Fit building, accessible via King Street West.

This site has been earmarked for various development projects. Viability issues have been cited at multiple times, and funding from Stockport Council has been vital in allowing the project to progress. A total of £5.6m of Housing Infrastructure Fund money will be placed into the project, and it has been claimed that without this funding, the site “will not be able to be regenerated and brought forward for development”.

With convenient transport links to the centre of Manchester, and significant developments taking place, Stockport is the ideal place to buy, live or invest.
